Reportedly the largest collection of Packard motorcars in the world...
This collection began back in the early 1950’s on a farm in West Auckland. Collector extraordinaire, farmer and roading contractor Graeme Craw, to preserve the history and machines of the Industrial revolution which took place in during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. He also had a deep appreciation of the ruggedness of early colonial New Zealand and the machines that literally shaped our country.
Graeme, being a rugged individualist himself, recognized the same attributes in the Packard automobile, being one of the few cars of the time that were able to withstand well the rigors of early New Zealand roads. The Packard caught Graeme’s attention because its makers were first class engineers building America’s most prestigious cars.  The collection houses 52 Packards, covering most models from 1919 to 1958 when Packard finally closed its doors.
After selling his farm, the collection moved in the old Montana Winery in the Waitakere Hills, and then on to it’s final resting place in the old Maungatapere Dairy factory in a move that took over 3 years. The museum never fully opened it’s doors in the north, as, sadly in 2007, Graeme passed away after a long illness and the museum was almost totally closed to the public.
To present and preserve a collection this size is a massive undertaking, and now, with the decision to take on a manager and the growing awareness of the council and many volunteers this collection is now open to the public.
